This week my adventure consisted of discovering London and seeing my first theatre show! During this trip I was able to stay with my cousins in London; Marc, Kelly, Bella, and the baby girl on the way. This allowed me to put together the pieces of information that they have told me about London before. There are similarities and differences in the culture and way of life between the United States and the United Kingdom and this trip really brought to life some of these features.
It was nice to begin our trip with a little catching up on the night I arrived. My family welcomed me to London at the Heathrow airport with open arms and a sign with my name on it. My little cousin Bella, was especially excited to see me, and I her. The following morning, we started the day off early by taking Bella to her school which was just down the street. It was cute to see all of the little kids and their parents chatting away. Next, Kelly and I took my first tube ride to Embankment where we walked around and saw Big Ben and boarded our river cruise lunch tour. The river cruise took us up and down the canal to see all the major sights such as the London Eye and the Tower Bridge. The lunch we enjoyed was also delicious! We got a really great deal for a three course meal of salmon, a main course of chicken pesto and potatoes, and chocolate-raspberry for desert. After our cruise, we took a few more tubes to see some more sights. On our walk we saw Lancaster square, Piccadilly Circus, the Covenant Gardens, and China Town. Each section of the city had its own culture to it. Piccadilly Circus had a hustle and bustle to it like I had never experienced before. Kelly told me that this is similar to New York’s Times Square. The Covenant Gardens had a much calmer vibe, which I found quite charming and was probably my favorite out of the areas that we saw. We also walked down the Mall to see Buckingham Palace, although we missed the changing of the Guards ceremony it was still a great sight to see! The gold embellishment on the statues and gates really made the architecture pop! Walking took a toll on my cousin as she was carrying along the little biscuit in her belly, so we were relieved to get a chance to sit down and enjoy some authentic Italian pizza! Lastly, we finished up our day with the show Wicked at the Apollo Theatre in Victoria. This show was amazing; the talent and production of this show definitely blew me away!
Overall, the weekend was fairly low key which was exactly what I needed! I got to spend some quality time with the Davies and learned a little bit more about what their daily life is like. I would definitely chop this weekend up to one of my best experiences so far because it involved the people that I love the most, my family! A little bit of familiarity was a nice change of pace and I hope that in the future years to come I will be able to visit them again!
